About us

We build the boring bit, so you can cook.

Five Star Diary is made in the UK by Highfold Group, which runs a handful of practical tools for small businesses, including Fourteen for allergen menus and Muster for fire safety logs.

Why a diary?

Every rated food business in England, Wales and Northern Ireland has a public score, and one of the three things an inspector scores is confidence in management: is there a food safety system, and is it actually followed? For most small kitchens that system is the FSA's Safer Food, Better Business pack (in Scotland, Food Standards Scotland's CookSafe, with Pass or Improvement Required results instead of a 0 to 5 rating), and the part that slips is the daily records.

Paper diaries get filled in on Friday afternoon. Fridge sheets go missing. The day the fridge was warm is the day nobody wrote anything down. None of that means the food wasn't safe, but it's very hard to prove.

So we made the diary something you do with the phone already in your pocket. Scan the sticker, type the number, sign with a PIN. When something's wrong, it asks what you did. When the inspector comes, it's all there.

What we promise

  • We'll never call ourselves “EHO approved”. The FSA and councils don't approve food safety apps. We follow the FSA's own format (and Food Standards Scotland's CookSafe for kitchens in Scotland), and we cite our sources.
  • Your records are yours. Export them any time, even after you stop paying.
  • Plain prices. Per site, per month or per year, no contracts. Every plan starts with a free trial.
  • Questions answered. Ask our assistant on any page, or email hello@fivestardiary.co.uk and we'll reply by email. We read every message and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Try it in your kitchen.

14 days free on any plan. Nothing is taken until the trial ends.
